Another Toy: My '91 Miata
Resting in the paddock at the Columbus IN Pro Solo.
My Miata is primarily stock. I race it in SCCA
Solo-II and Pro Solo2
.
Some day, when I no longer need to keep this car legal for the SCCA SOLO 2
stock classes, I've started planning what I'll do with this project car:
- supercharger
- I've bought a Nelson-packaged Paxton belt-driven centrifugal
supercharger. This is a slightly :-) oversized unit originally designed for
5.0 liter V-8s. That should make it capable of producing whatever level of
boost I eventually want.
- springs
- I want to lower it a bit and stiffen it up alot. I'm still researching
who makes the stiffest springs for a Miata.
- sway bars
- I want the stiffest sway bars I can find. Right now, that looks liek
Eibach bars.
- wheels
- I want to go plus-1 or plus-2 with the wheels and tires. I'm torn
between Panasports and BBS RC or RX wheels.
- exhaust
- with the forced induction, I'll have even more exhaust to get rid of.
That measn I'll need headers and a big-bore exhaust. The Jackson Racing
header looks good right now.
I have some other wheeled toys:
my
'72 DeTomaso Pantera
, my '96 Audi A4 Quattro
and my '84 Yamaha RZ350.
Stuff I've Done To It
I've done the following things to it to prep it for competition:
- installed a Hard Dog rollbar. It's a 4-point attach (at the
seat belt anchor points) and it makes me feel a little more
secure - especially when lapping at the track.
- installed GAB 8-way adjustable shocks. These are very
adjustable (both compression and rebound damping) and help
me make up for the fact that I can't change the springs in
the stock class. I generally run the GAB's on "1"
on the street and "8" on smooth autocross and
track surfaces, with settings in between for rougher
surfaces.
- installed a Leistritz cat-back exhaust. This replaces the
exhaust from the catalytic converter on back and is a little
lower restriction. It also sounds great. Maybe good for
about 5hp.
- mounted DOT-approved racing tires. I mounted BF Goodrich R1
tires in the 205/55-14 size on my original rims. These are
for the street and can also be used for track time or for
autox if I don't feel like hauling the spare rims and
changing tires at the event. I also bought (used) a set of
MX-3 alloys (these are the wheels in the picture above) that
are dimensionally identical to the original rims. I
currently have Hoosier competition radials on them with the
autocross compound (also 205/55-14). These tires cannot be
driven on the street though, so if I want to use them at an
event, I have to change tires there before and after
competition. Incidentally, you *can* actually carry four
tires mounted on wheels in the interior of a Miata. You lay
one down on the rear shelf behind the seats, stand one in
front of the passenger seat against the dash, and lay the
last two behind it on the passenger seat. It's cozy, but it
will work - and you can still see your passenger-side
mirror. I'm thinking about building a tiny trailer to carry
my tires to events...
- changed the alignment to a more race-oriented one. This means
maximum available negative camber (front and rear), maximum
available positive caster in the front, neutral toe in the
rear and about 1/4" toe out in the front.
