This supplied by Mike Fortuna (mfortuna@BayNetworks.COM) (ANSA) - Turin, February 26 - Nuccio Bertone, the doyen of Italian car designers and a creative artist whose talents stretched from futuristic '60s Lamborghinis to the latest big- selling Fiats, died this morning at his Turin home at the age of 83. Bertone transformed his father's small car-body shop into a group that employs 1,500 people and generates turnover of 540 billion lire (340 million dollars) a year. Bertone received two honorary degrees for his innovative designs, and trained many younger designers including Giorgetto Giugiaro and Marcello Gandini. Among his most popular creations were the 1954 Alfa Rome Giulietta Sprint (40,00 of which were made, against a projected run of 500), the Fiat 850 Spider (140,000 made), the Fiat X1/9 (180,000 made), the Alfa Giulietta SS, the Simca Coupe' 1200S, the Fiat Dino Coupe', and the Alfa Romeo Montreal. He also styled famous and exclusive speedsters like the Lamborghini Miura, Espada and Countach; the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 and the Lancia Stratos.
