RE>Shrieking Speedo = 3/17/97 It's probably the cable, not the speedo itself that is screaming. They = tend to dry out over the years. Lubing it might help, you can get = special cable lubes (auto parts stores may have it, but I know motorcycle = stores carry special stuff for all the motorcycle control cables). Craig Cline Oceanside, Ca #7352 -------------------------------------- Date: 3/17/97 4:28 AM To: Craig Cline From: Andy Poling My Pantera's speedometer is failing in a particularly obnoxious manner. I was traveling at (ahem) slightly above the speed limit on a back road = when out of nowhere comes this shrieking siren. When it started, it sounded = like a State Trooper cruiser had just landed in the seat next to me. I almost had brown trousers. A second later I started thinking that some high pressure hose had split. After a few moments' panic, I finally realized it was the speedometer. = It was *shrieking* - loud enough that when it started I nearly jumped out of = my skin. Now it comes and goes, and it has developed a ticking sound in between. When the shrieking fades, it turns more into a sound of plastic gears grinding, and then finally subsides almost completely. And when it's happening the speedo needle looks like a scene from the X-Files. Is this the typical failure mode for the speedo? This is already a replacement speedo (installed by a former owner), so I find myself wondering how long the next one might last. Are there any alternative speedo's I can install instead? -Andy 72 Pantera: power 91 Miata: quickness 96 A4Q: = traction 84 RZ350: all the above ------------------ RFC822 Header Follows ------------------ Received: by smtp.rc.trw.com with SMTP;17 Mar 1997 04:25:41 U Received: (from majordom@localhost) by tvol-gw.wgate.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) = id HAA14274 for detomaso-outgoing; Mon, 17 Mar 1997 07:14:02 -0500 Received: from ws.realbig.com (b.realbig.com [206.161.253.65]) by = tvol-gw.wgate.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id HAA14270 for = <detomaso@wgate.com>; Mon, 17 Mar 1997 07:13:57 -0500 Received: from ws.realbig.com ([127.0.0.1]) by ws.realbig.com with SMTP = id <86811-19934>; Mon, 17 Mar 1997 07:16:56 -0500 Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 07:16:53 -0500 (EST) From: Andy Poling <andy@realbig.com> To: detomaso@wgate.com Subject: Shrieking Speedo Message-ID: <Pine.LNX.3.91.970316194555.506y-100000@ws.realbig.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=3DUS-ASCII Sender: owner-detomaso@wgate.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: Andy Poling <andy@realbig.com>
