Andy, There was an article in either PI or POCA about this many, many years ago. As I recall, it suggested you carry a short piece of large heavy vinyl (or rubber, but I don't think so) tubing (I don't remember the diameter, you'll have to experiment). You push this up on the gas pump nozzle (depressing the sleeve) and put the other end into your tank.
