The ford piston compressors have frequently been used as air compressors. I knew a guy that worked at the test department of BorgWarner where they tested the compressors. He said that when let run they would pump up over 600 psi before the blew the head off. They actually have a oil in the crank case that allows them to run as an air compressor. The biggest problem is that the freon comtaminates the oil and when exposed to air it will make an acid that will eat up the compressor. As long as you do not have any air in the system and it is just out of freon, then it should not hurt the compressor.
