Gosh fellows....all this talk of "cutouts" takes me back to the early '60s when Brock and I installed cutouts on my 1950 flat head V8 Ford. They were from JC Whitney and were a bit on the cheesy side. Most of the problems centered around the flapper valve which rattled obnoxiously when in the open position. And when closed you still had to back off the throttle when passing the local fuzz because of leaks. But the real concern is the effect on the engine. Straight pipes, cutouts, etc...anything that changes the designed "out" flow of the system can have an effect on the "in" flow of air and impose a detrimental effect on the performance curve. Something to do with back pressure and the draft of air through the carbs etc. I always felt that when in the open position, the old '50 Ford sounded mean but wasn't quite as quick off the line. NOW THERE WAS A CAR!!!
