RE>Oil pressure fluctuations 5/1/97 Shane, Is your oil feed mechanical or electrical???? If the latter, I would = suspect that some sort of voltage fluctuation could be at fault. I experienced this same sort of thing on my trip to LA in my 68 XR7. = Also running Mobil1 15-50W so should be consistent. I would see my gas = gauge, temp, and oil pressure all rise and drop together. These are all = fed off of the same voltage regulator and when it does not work, the = guages are down too. This regulator is little more than a thermal strip that opens and = closes a set of contacts such that you get about 5V at the guages..... = not a great setup but it works. I would think that a DC-DC convertor = would be better 12V-5V, or some sort of diode tree with a voltage drop = across a known value resistor.... So, not sure what Lucas or whomever uses as a regulator, if any at all, = but this is the problem with guages in the Mercury world. Lets see, if you sheared your distributor drive gear roll pin, you = would drop oil pressure too, as well as run like a complete turd... any = truth here?? Steve -------------------------------------- Date: 5/1/97 10:18 To: Steve Liebenow From: Shane F. Ingate All, Just querying the collective wisdom of the group. When I am running at a constant throttle, my oil pressure (1972 model) reads about 53 lb/sq.inch (oil warm, 15/50 Mobil 1, 10qt oil pan). = Occassionally, I see the guage drop to about 40 lb/sq.inch, sometimes 35, fluctuate for = several seconds, then return to 53. It did this for the run between Baker & Las Vegas = (160 miles?), but between Baker and San Diego, there was no change at all! Do others notice such a fluctuation? Should I be worried? What could = cause it? Worn oil pump? Lint on the oil-pump pickup filter screen?
