Don't forget, California police tend to remember distinctive vehicles without California plate. Even making note as to the date and the next time (after 10 days I think) giving tickets and even confiscating vehicles. I know of a couple of people who did the opposite. If you have a friend living out of state, you tell the DMV that the car is garaged in Oklahoma, etc. but that you want to register it in California because you want the California plates (especially if they are vanity plates). They send the plates to your out of state address (your friend sends them back to you). You are exempt from smog. The DMV was glad to get your dollars. And the local police see only California plates. Might take some dancing if you get stopped, but just tell them you had the car shipped in temporarily for a car show.
