RE>Dead Battery? 5/2/97 Nobie, A couple of things that I can think of: 1) Hosed battery 2) Excessive current drain- check by pulling negative cable and putting = ammeter in series with cable and battery. Should see somewhere around = 70ma or less depending on options such as clock and the CD/Radio thang. I = had one time had an ammeter connected such that it was "ON" all the time = and would kill the battery over 2-3 weeks. Killed my brand new battery = over time..... replaced starter, regulator, wiring..... then battery! = Connected guage properly to the "I" part of the ignition circuit so that = it was hot only when car was running..... no more problem. Sold car (62 = SS 4spd Impala). Oh for wanton desire of a bigger garage! 3) Related to #2: Ran into this one this weekend. Bad alternator. It was = actually somewhat working, but a shorted diode in the rectumfrier bridge = was pulling minimum of 270ma to a max of "blow the 2A fuse" in my meter, = which was enuf to kill this new battery too! Disconnected the alternator = entirely and then current draw fell to zero. New alt in picture netted = 6ma drain.... super good! SO, go for the current thing and disconnect stuff until you get waaaay = down into the under 30ma range. Clocks should not draw very much. Stereos = will draw an itsy bitsy amount to keep the memory/clock going. Any = aftermarket stuff, stereo, alarm, guages, ??? would be my first suspect = as you never know who hooked what up wrong, followed now by the = alternator.... good luck! Any others? Steve -------------------------------------- Date: 5/1/97 22:40 To: Steve Liebenow From: Nobbie I've been having a recurring problem with the "P" not starting. It will jump and push start fine. But the battery seems to die faster and faster. It used to be dead after sitting for two days. Now it dies when I try to drive home from work. I got home tonight and shut the car off and tried to restart it, the car just went whirrrrrrrrr....(nothing). This is especially perplexing when the ampmeter showed that everything = was fine. I've cleaned the battery terminals and the main ground terminal which was super-corroded. I noticed that there was a lot of white powder on the metal retaining bracket where it touches the leading edge of the battery top. Is the battery leaking? It is one of those crummy Die-Hards that's less than a year old. The stereo and CD Changer are hard-wired straight to the battery. Maybe that's draining it. I still have the flickering "GEN" light when braking over rough roads. This is getting annoying. I'm getting a multimeter tomorrow and a new battery. I've also ordered one of those portable jump-start batteries to carry around. Any thoughts gang?
