Tim, this may insult your intelligence, but I just had a Nor-Cal member almost sue a local engine builder for excessive smoking of a rebuilt 351C. He thought the rings apparently hadn't seated, after 1500 miles. We spent hours on the phone, before he casually mentioned his dipstick had been broken and brazed on the pan end before he'd purchased the car. Clue- light!! I asked him to measure his while I ran out and checked mine. HIs dipstick was about1-1/4" shorter than mine. With a 10-qt pan, he had about 14 qts in there! No wonder the thing smoked! I remember the TSPs told what the "true" length should be. Is it possible your dipstick is non-standard length and you're really running too little oil? J DeRyke
