Bill and All, Ok ... just an hour before the first Austin Texas Pantera get-together at the County Line Barbeque I decided to put in the new gear reduction starter that arrived by UPS the other day. Yes, I followed up on WH's recommendation and ordered one from Tom at the address below. It duly arrived about 10 days later and sat on my kitchen counter for a few days till I found time to put it on. Nice lookin little unit ... rebuilt with new parts I'm told ... So ... car up on the jack stands ... me under the car ... #1741 has GTS headers so it was a bit of a wiggle to get the original one off thru a just-big-enough hole between the header tubes and a chassis frame member but come off it did ! New one went on without a hitch except that the nose flange was a little thicker than the original one so the studs were just a little short ... cranked the key and .... click, click, click ... oops ... call up Tom ... what jumper between the starter cable stud and the third terminal on the solenoid ? ... Tom musta forgotten to include it. I fabricated one up out of 14 guage stranded copper wire and a couple of crimp on terminals, rewired the sucker, flipped the key again and ... whirr ... whirr .... grrrr ... Like Bill says, it sounds bitchen, works great, is smaller and lighter than the original and came to a total of $145 with COD charges etc. And we made it to the county line with time to spare ;-) I'm going to pull the studs when I have more time and install longer ones. Thanks you Bill and all others who provided suggestions for my hot-starting problem.
