There is an odd kind of lever set up in there to make the shift linkage do a right turn. into the trannie. It is kind of neat really how the transmission is shifted with a single rod. Volkswaged did it for ages with the beetle. One thing to check though is the trunion bushing that the shift linkage goes through. It is on the frame where the trans meets the engine. Sometimes the nut on the bottom comes loose and causes shifting problems. It also needs occational lubrication.
