Okay Motorheads, Newbies & Grasshoppers , So ya wanna know how your intake manifold compares? For those still running iron 4V Cleveland heads the choice of what the best intake manifold to use has been the subject of much bench racing. Which is why so many people are building Clevelands with Ford 302B aluminum heads or gawd-forbid, going to Windsor's. :-] Ron Graves just mailed me a copy of a 10/93 Super Ford Magazine article which tested several intakes on a serious high compression stroked 351C. Here's the summary of the best indicating where they made the peak numbers (with a *). : NUMBER INTAKE RPM TORQUE LB/FT HORSEPOWER First Holly Strip Dominator 5000 420 400 " " 5500 *435 455 " " 6250 418 *498 The Killer Intake! From 5250 to 6750 rpm the volumetric efficiency is 102 to 110.6 percent! If you have one of these babies (and I do) treat it like gold cause Holly doesn't make it anymore which is a shame. If you find one at a swap meet buy it immediately and protect it with your life. After my last engine re-build we ran three intakes on a chassis dyno and the Holly made the most power. _______________________________________________________________________ Second Ford Part #4145 3750 *425 303 " " 5500 408 427 " " 6250 411 *490 This duel-plane intake thinks it's a single plane! Volumetric Efficiency is very good, although 100 percent isn't reached until 5750 rpm. _________________________________________________________________________Third Edelbrock Torker 351 4750 *421 399 " " 5500 416 436 " " 6750 374 *480 This is a low-rise single-plane intake that thinks it's a duel plane! Peak torque comes at 4750 rpm, which is very streetable. VE reaches 100 percent at 5000 rpm, hitting 110 percent at the top end. ________________________________________________________________________ Fourth Wiand X-Celerator 5250 *410 *410 " " 5750 *410 *449 " " 6500 382 *473 Another single plane that thinks its a dual-plane. The torque curve is flat as Nebraska, with two torque peaks at 5250 and 5750 rpm. VE is good, reaching 100 percent at 5250 rpm and climbing to 107 at 6750 rpm. I will pass the entire article to Dave and Linda Adler for publication in the next PI. What about the Edelbrock Performer? Good street manifold with low-end torque. However, it dies at 5500 rpm. The other positive. . . it fits under the stock engine screen! Canadian's an real men will want a real intake. :-] Thanks to Ron Graves for sharing.
