I eventually learned that the filler plug on the side works great. If your ZF is like many of the ones I've seen, the side filler plug also lets you know that you have poured enough fluid into the case. Once the fluid reaches the plug area and begins to drip out, you know you have put the right amount of fluid in the transmission. After you replace the plug cap. Drive the car a few minutes and then repeat the process. It may take this second filling to make sure the fluids are at the right level and disbursed thoughout the transmission.
