Capt Mike Drew 150 Westgate Dr. San Francisco, CA 94127 Home: (415) 334-7860 E-mail: MikeLDrew@aol.com Hello all, The Monterey Historics has become so large that organizer Steve Earle actually has a completely separate and distinct event the previous weekend, called appropriately enough, the "Pre-Historics." It's very low-key, usually action-packed. Many racers 'audition' here for several years before being chosen to run in the main event. Others who are running in the full-on Historics enter the weekend before to get in some much-needed practice. The Pre-Historics are now over, and while I wasn't there, Nor-Cal Shelby Club member Ted Smith was, and offered these reflections to the Nor-Cal e-mail forum: >>>Didn't get in to the Pre-Historics this year but went and hung out........thought I'd share some bits and pieces..... Helping someone solve a low rev problem under a huge haulers canopy. Working next to two of the most famous GT40's in existence......someone's cute 7-8 year old daughter is trying to be helpful by "cleaning" off the cars.....a squirt bottle of Windex in one hand....a grimy cotton towel in the other, most of it dragging on the ground.....squirt,squirt, squirt along a 3 foot section of GT40, wipe, wipe with the towel, move along for 3 more feet of squirting and towel dragging and more wiping........being sure to also get as much of the plexiglass as she can reach........"Good job, honey, thanks...." as she moves on to the next one....now that's class........ Green GT40 in Saturdays practice session is really being driven hard and well.....I'm standing next to it's pit as it pulls in......driver struggles out of the cockpit...."Oh, Hi Brian." (Redman....no wonder........) Local lad, Kenny Epsman, driving the hell out of his GT350 in the Saturday race, all over the leader in a 427 Cobra with Waltons GT40 closing in fast as they begin to lap the backmarkers...... The F1 cars lined up in their pits.....the mid pack and backmarker cars all have brake bleeder bottles hanging off the calipers.........tight sphincter time for many approaching the corners, no doubt........ A 57 Corvette, very original factory Sebring car.....new owner, never raced before, sorting out the car.......Knockoff front wheels....loses a wheel......the chromed bronze tri-nut mating surface doesn't quite match up with the mating surface of the aluminum replica wheels(originals were mag) and it looks a bit....well, unsettling. The wheel manufacturer was there, driving another race car and we mention that the Corvette guy might appreciate some advice as to what to change to keep the wheels on......He freaks...."I'M ON VACATION AND I DON'T WANNA TALK TO ANYONE ABOUT WHEELS!! THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH THE WHEELS!!! I HAVEN'T HAD A VACATION IN 9 YEARS!!! I OUGHTA JUST SELL THIS BUSINESS!!!!!" (We offer him 5 bucks and he storms off....) I know where I WON"T be buying my next set........ Next week, the real deal.......be there! ==============================================================================
