THe DOT ones have a swivel flange at each end to prevent twisting. And weather you install DOT lines or non-DOT lines, inspect them on a regular basis. Not every day, but when you swap wheels, just make a cursory examination to see if there is any damage. Not that it's likely, but there have been instances of catastrophic failure of SS lines. I'm not against DOT lines, I run 'em and like 'em. But just passing on a word of warning. -Josh2 - -- Joshua Hadler '74 914 2.0 CSP/Bi - Hooligan Racing #29 - CONIVOR '87 Quantum Syncro - aka stealth quattro jhadler@rmi.net http://rainbow.rmi.net/~jhadler/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 11:52:23 -0400 From: paul.foster@micromuse.com Subject: Re: Stainless Steel Brake Line Recommendation soh@smartt.com wrote: > > Chris Fletcher wrote: > > > > I was told the SMC's are DOT. But I just looked in a vendor's catalog and they do now offer both where they used to have only one listed with the usual 'off road use only' caveat. It looks like some vendor is going through the approval process (whatever that is) probably to lessen the fears of some vehicle owners. All I can say is that I'd trust the non-approved braided metal lines which have been successfully used in racing for years more than the 'DOT-approved' rubber lines found on passenger cars. I can also personally attest to another attribute. When you break the wheel off the suspension, the SSBL will keep it from getting lost. <g> Note well that not all SSBLs have the same quality. Buy from Earl's or another comparable well-known racing vendor you can trust. Avoid the car boutique places. Brake lines are not a good place to save $10.
