More ancient history, but someone wrote a Tech Info for P I back in the '70s on this. He said that he'd shortened his shift lever 2" by cutting a section out & re- welding, and recommended not cutting much more, 'cause fingers could hit the console cover. He also said the stock shift gate must be replaced 'cause the gear positions were much closer together after cutting the shift stick. A club member with an '87 GT-5S broke his stick, and found the hard way that it COULD NOT be professionally welded, because it seemed to be made up of several pieces of thin steel laminated or brazed together, then chromed. After 2 attempts, he bought a used early shift stick and apparently it fit OK. Be careful if you've ever replaced a stick- the later ones may be unrepairable.
