A company called "Zara" was trying to market a 'transaxle' made up of a Doug Nash 5-speed directly coupled to a 9" Ford diff converted to independent rear suspension. This of course made the assembly a bit too long, so they then mounted the drive axles midway up the tranny and drove them thru 3" wide Gilmer belts on each side, stabilized with external bearings. Actually, the assembly looked pretty clean, and the components used are well known as bullet-proof. This is how those FWD German rally cars get their 400+ horses to the ground with decent car balence, except they use a really noisy gear drive stack. Don't know if ZARA is still in business...
