RE>Strange wiring &147 E-mails. 9/2/97 Re 147 entries....... was over 200 when I got in today.... was out Friday = too! : ) Hey Curt! How about a summary every Monday morning! Would save me a gob = of time wading thru piles of shtuff, double entries, and replies that are = nothing but a repost of the original!!!! Come on guys...CUT IT OUT! = Priceless and way too accurate..... scary! Something sounds real strange about Nancy's wiring..... Wouldn't this = be the way that you would want things to be....? +12V--->Ign Sw--->+***+ (Resistor)---->+ (Plus side) COIL (Minus = side)+---> Dist. Starter Solenoid "S" terminal--------- --->+ (Plus side) COIL (for = start mode) Resistor drops +12V voltage to "run" value somewhere in 7-9V (??) range. = "S" terminal of start solenoid supplies +12V to coil for "start" = conditions when you want a good hot spark. I would just want to be sure = that the "solenoid" that Nancy spoke of was indeed the starter one and = not an "idle" solenoid or such that needs 12V, like the auto choke too. = These should come off of a true +12V point such as the voltage regulator = terminal. I don't think the ignition coils should be hooked up to these = on the same wire. Your dual point version should work just fine! But yes, I bet it is a = fun esperience to get them set up right! I always like the reference to = the dual point version in one of the DeTomaso owners manuals where the = text mentions something about a "spare" set of breakers.... Hah! So = that's where you store the extra set..... I have thoruhly enjoyed the Duraspark setup that I dropped in my Windsor. = Pulled it out of a 78ish full size Galaxie... ( just remembered boner = line from Spaceballs....something about coming from earth.... "no I was = born in the Ford Galaxie." Dumb.... but funny.... Anyway, degunked (unvarnished) the thing, dropped on a new gear and = hooked the wiring up. No more points..... just oil the damn felt in the = center of the shaft once in a while and we're happy! Serves my = streetfighting effort..... 5K max.... just fine! If it weren't for the = connector on the distributor having the extra wires, you'd never know it = was there, it looks so stock. I think I put my original vac advance unit = back on it. Didn't like the late model curve. I believe my entire = capital output was under $30 too, as someone else mentioned. Biggest = dollar item was the new gear! Biggest problem I have now is smokin' plug = wires from time to time. Usually shows up with dampness.....snap..snap... = low speed miss.... jus' feel around 'till ya pees yur pants.... thas the = bad one! I think I gained about .3mpg too! Really cleaned up my low end = emissions! I think I was able to lean out my Holley idle screws about a = half turn or so. Did an esperiment where I didn't touch the car for about = two years...... still passed smog! Then I cleaned the carb and replaced = the air cleaner element, which is about all you can do with no points! = Plugs were still in great shape some time after that...... Good no = brainer system that you can trouble shoot fairly easy. I used a 1980 = Lincoln Versailles "Electrical Troubleshooting" manual, a supplement to = the normal 4-5 volume set typically associated with Ford stuff. Turned = out I was out of gas..... Carb dried out whilst I was down for frame = welding, freeze plugs (needs to be done again...aack!) and other = nonsense!! I would guess that one could have their stock distributor's curve = plotted, then take a Duraspark version and have it modified to manual = advance only, and then duplicate the original curve?? Should then be a = "drop-in" natural for no pinging etc?? Howaboutit Dave? Sound like something to do?? Heard of anything like = this?? It would be a better alternative than having to dance with the = smog boys about your Mallury duel point not bein a stock one.... gotta = be... wouldn't be... legal.... .03=A2 Steve -------------------------------------- Date: 8/28/97 20:50 To: Steve Liebenow From: NANCY A HANEY Hello kids; I'm considering putting a breakerless ignition in my car to replace the dual point I put in to replace the Hall installed Allison electronic ignition that took a shit four years ago ( whoa! run on sentence). I would like a mallory system ( Iiked the tour our club was given there). There are four wires that come out of the loom that go to a connector then two come out and go to two connectors on the ressistor, then one wire goes to one side of the coil, the other side splits into two, one going to the solinoid the other to the other side of the coil ( another run on sentence). I hope everyone is following me here. These four wires out of the loom are not on my wiring schematic. ( surprise, surprise!) And also the ressistor on a friend of mine's Pantera only has two connectors, why the difference? And do I need the ressistor with a Mallory ignition? I really don't rellish the idea of replacing the points and condensor in the present destributor, what with all the fun I had with it the last time. Help, please. Should I keep the dual point or does someone have a better idea than the Mallory setup? Thanks for any help GONANCY P.S. Flies are no yellow, not even Ferrari flies.
