Shouldn't there be a diode in the circuit from the starter solenoid to the

coil to prevent back current to flow through the solenoid when the engine

starts to run? Otherwise the solenoid will be shorting the switch or points

depending on type of distributor. Another possibility is to activate a relay

from the solenoid to avoid the voltage drop in the diode.
