For whatever reason, the clutch is dragging. Improperly adjusted someplace or a too-thick disc. This is why most vendors sell a 'long-throw' slave cylinder because the stock setup was marginal from the factory. It's more important to not let the clutch drag than the so-called free play dimension is. Free play keeps the $23 throwout bearing from constantly contacting the clutch fingers & wearing out while clutch drag will screw up your tranny synchronizers for thousands of dollars in repairs.
