From: rbarkley@earthlink.net (Richard Barkley) Subject: SB-42: Are there any "real '74s"?? Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 08:04:44 +0000
A friend of mine, Bob Doll, has a "'74" GTS and is of the opinion that there never were any real '74s made. A few weeks ago, when the bill was signed, he was happy for me, but a little depressed at having missed out. A week or so later I forwarded a couple of the posts about getting '74s reregistered as '73s. He perked up. I talked to him yesterday, and he said that he had checked his build date and it was October '73. He then checked his registration and it has always been registered as a '73. (Guess he really never looked at it). It says something like " '73 sold as new in '74" somewhere on it. He said that had heard that all of the '74 Panteras had been built in '73 and did not meet the '74 requirements for (I think it was) bumper height or what ever it was that ended the importation. So, is it possible we are all off the hook? As an aside, I bought my "'72" (#1549) in Dec. '71. It had been built in May of '71. Some of you may remember that LM sold a few in the summer of '71, but soon put a freeze on any more sales while they fixed a number of problems. Anyway, the dealer was going to register it as a '71, but at my request changed it to '72. I wanted it to be '72 because I wasn't sure I was going to keep it and thought that that would make it more valuable if I were to sell it. What did I know, I was young and foolish! Anyway, my guess is that many '74s (maybe all) are really '73s that were upped by either the dealer or the buyer for similar reasons. If the above is true, I think we need to get the word out to non-list/POCA/PI CA members who own '74s ASAP. Do the clubs have databases of non-members? Could this info be helpful in getting new members (as in this is just an example of how the club can help you)? BTW, I Just got my final smog test done yesterday!! Sincerely, Richard Barkley To Ski or not to Ski, that is the question!
