John, when I pull halfshafts, I undo the bolts on each end just like you, but instead of compressing the halves, I unscrew the threaded collar and take the two halves apart to be removed separately. This way, with a great deal of difficulty on the drivers side, you can get the things off without dropping the exhaust. And if the split washers were the right size, they would fit just like flat washers. Either are OK; be sure to torque the bolts though. When reassembling the halves, the inner yokes welded to the slip joints must be in alignment (same plane) or you'll have tremendous vibrations. And, if you install them with the small ends (male spline sections) inboard, there is more clearance above the exhaust. This is not the way the Factory did it, though. J DeRyke
