Kirby, > Our Longchamp has an Australian engine (or at least everyone who seems to > know says it is). How, in fact, do you tell for sure just looking at it > from the outside? Your car's a '78 right? No U.S. 351C's since '74. Later Clevelands were sourced from Australia. If your engine is the original it's from down under. > The heads are definitely 2V, since they look like the 2v heads in the POCA > issue about heads and I had to get 2V exhaust gaskets in order for them to > fit when I was fixing the exhaust leak that the car had initially. The real question is whether or not they are closed chamber or open chamber. > Are the valve covers the same bolt pattern as a Cleveland? Yes. > The intake is a Holley. Don't know more than that... Holley carb on an Edlebrock manifold! > :-)) That would be the Holley Street Dominator. It's a low rise single plane that's meant to be compatible with either 2V or 4V heads (ports are 2V size). One interesting thing is that the carb pad opening is not square. The aft part is wider than the front part, as if it's meant to clear spreadbore secondaries. When I get a chance, I'll see if a Quadrajet or a Thermoquad will bolt up. > I also have the original intake which is a heavy cast iron 4bbl model. Is it spreadbore or squarebore? I'm told a lot of the Aussie 351C's were fitted with Quadrajet carbs. > The car doesn't perform as well as I expected.... but then, it's a lot > heavier car. Maybe the carb is a small one... I need to find a number on it > also and see what cfm it's supposed to be. As far as Edelbrock carb are concerned: 1404 is 500 cfm 1405, 1406, and 1408 are 600 cfm 1407 and 1410 are 750 cfm The Holley single plane intake isn't really suited for a heavy car. I'd swap it out for an Edelbrock Performer or an Offy Dual Port (available in square or spreadbore) intake. The spreadbore Dual Port would be my choice for throttle response and fuel economy. Also, it's likely you have open chamber heads. If so, I'd pick up a set of closed chamber Aussie 2V's (available from Mike Fielder for $300, sometimes less at swap meets) to get the compression ratio up. Also, I'm not sure what sort of cam the Aussie open chamber 2V's came with, but the U.S. 2V cams were pretty lame. Later, Dan Jones
