As far as the springs machining out the perches, SVO/Ford sells a hardened

spring seat (p/n M-6536-A351, $11.78 per head set- old jobber price), to be

used on 302/351 SVO aluminum heads, which have the same problem in spades!

I'll bet they'd drop right onto your iron heads, or maybe with a little
