Performance? And 10.5" rear/9" front, is this part of keeping the understeer/oversteerbalanced better or just a similar tire width to what you've run in the past?
<<<<<Yo Chi-town,
If you know the answers what the hell are you asking me the questions for! <grin>
Seriously, it is everything you mentioned, (speed, balance, etc) and I also want to stay with a 15" race tire/wheel
combination on the Pantera. The Winston cup tires are pretty damn durable and hold up well to
the speeds run at Silver State. When I made the decision to move up in speed I spoke to Bobby Byers,
and Junior Wilson again who have run the high end speeds and they both endorsed the race tires. They both believe
the Winston Cup tires are better suited for the high end stuff. . .I have alot of respect for these guys because they have as Go-Nancy so aptly put it, "been there - done that!" Don't get me wrong - I'm totally open to data or input that will support otherwise.
FWIW, I think "any" of the DOT Z-rated legal performance tires out there (Yoko's, Pirelli, Hoosier, BFG, etc) will get the job done up to 170mph but all these DOT legal tires have also experienced some tire failure and/or tire tread seperation on the high-end at speeds at or above 170 mph in this event on heavy vehicles. I ran new BFG R-1's in each of the last two SS events on stock Campy rims (7&8's) and they performed great. I think their good tires. And I wouldn't hesitate to run them again - at speeds up to 170mph.
MD --------------C883A2238743F9C5E78B1B6F--
