I responded privately because I didn't think it was "detomaso related", even though material on this list strays pretty often. I also didn't want to start a discussion on the topic, merely an opinion. That said, I still don't think it's the same to call a person a Jap as it is to call a thing a "Jap car". In the latter case, Jap is just short for Japanese, but in the former it carries behavioral/ social connotations that tend to offend. I would not call a Hyundai a "Jap car" because it's not Japanese. Nobbie did mention, though, that he had been referred to as a "Jap". That's not only offensive, but wrong.
