Kirby, Go buy a mechanics stethescope. Available from tool trucks, Sears, some good parts stores. Keep it away from pulleys and belts. Once you get used to the sounds, you will be at the cylinder with the problem. Works on bearings, lifters, valves, and anything that generates noises that are not all synchronous. Learn to use it on an engine that sounds good to start with.
