Shane: Thats not a lot of money. But my $0.02 would be ignition (junk the
stock dizzy, replace with MSD system, new plugs gapped appropriately)
and the Performer manifold. If you do the work yourself, you
could alternatively slap on a set of closed-chambered heads, preferably
the 2V.

Since an engine is nothing more then an air pump, conventional wisdom dictates that the more air you can flow, the more efficient the engine will be. In my humble opinion, I would start with a Edelbrock Performer intake, topped with a 650 Holley carb. I noticed a great increase out of my stock motor with just that upgrade.
If you can spare some extra change, I'd recommend a complete MSD 6AL ignition system, including the billet distributor. The increased spark discharge burns the fuel more efficiently and greatly improves performance and fuel mileage. Figure the total package to run you around $1,200.
All of the parts can be installed in a weekend and are available through Jegs and other high-performance supply houses.
