Shane,

No question, vendor is in the wrong and should accept full
responsibility for the return shipping. Did you talk to the vendor
himself, or to a sales clerk? If the vendor himself doesn't know about
it, insist on talking to him directly; I'm sure you'll gain
satisfaction.

People are quick to throw darts at the vendors, but in my experience
they're pretty reasonable once the facts are made clear.

Mike

Subject: Vendor question

All,
I general question for the list.

A couple of weeks ago, I called a vendor and ordered the
bar that bolts to the seatbelt mount points on the firewall. The
bar is used for supporting the shoulder harness of a 5-point seat
belt harness. A large package arrived a couple of days later,
which included the bar AND two sets of 4-point harnesses which I had
not ordered. I was charged for the bar and the harnesses.

I contemplated keeping the harnesses, but they were only
4-point, were manufactured 3 years ago (out-of-date by SCCA standards),
the shoulder harness was only 2" webbing rather than 3", and they
were more expensive than Simpson products from Summit, so I decided
to return them. The cheapest shipping I could find was USPS at $17.

I called the vendor and explained that I ordered only the bar,
and not the complete package, and wanted a refund of my money. No
problem.
I then asked who was to pay for the return shipping, and the vendor
told me that I was responsible. I tried to explain that the error was
not mine, and that I had already paid a premium to ship the bar plus
harness,
but the vendor told me that in order to be credited for the harness, I
would be responsible for returning it.

I must admit that I did not order the bar by item number from
their catalog, and just asked the salesperson for the bar that supports
the harness; I made no mention of the harness or how many I wanted.

So what to do? I have paid for the return and shipped the unwanted
harness. Is the vendor in the wrong here, or do I chalk this up
to experience?
