I replaced my vacuum advance mechanism about a year ago, or was it
two years ago. Anyway, I think that turning it clockwise made the
spring stiffer and "minimized" the advance. My old vacuum unit
(duraspark II) had an "8" stamped on the back and appeared to give about
8 degrees of advance at full (22 in) vacuum. The chief auto replacement
canister for a Ford truck had a "12" stamped on the back and appeared to
give about 12 degrees of total advance at full vacuum. (on both the
travel was limited by a tang on the actuation arm)
Does it make a significant difference? Maybe in your mileage (if
it wasn't working or set too stiff) or it could contribute to a pinging
problem if it was set too loose.
How SHOULD it be set? I defer. I think to answer that you'd have
to talk about initial, cetrifugal, vaccuum and total advance. Can any
one help with that?
