I received a few replies to this request so I will summarize:

Everyone seems to agree that side mirrors are a good idea.
Some people had the glue on mirrors fall off or knew people
that had that misfortune. If I do go for them I'll make double
sure to get the glass and mirror base surface prepped as best
as I can (may even follow instructions for the glue...).

No one had mirrors they hated, received a couple of good remarks
about salvaging mirrors from a Chrysler 'K' car, they look good
and are cheap. Also no one took the opportunity to plug their
favorite vendor, which actually would have been fine with me.
