| Subject: | Suspension Noise |
| Date: | Tue, 7 Jul 1998 14:12:50 +0000 |
I was polishing and waxing my car this weekend and I noticed that I had a
suspension sound coming from the driver's side front suspension. When the
body moves relative to the wheels, I get a quiet sort of clunk. I checked
the wheel bearings and they are fine. So I searched a little more. The
sound is most pronounced when I push down on the car. If I push hard and
let go, the thunk will occur twice. I am under the belief that I have a
worn bushing. Pushing down on the car causes the bushing to move one way,
then the spring causes it go back the other way. It does occur in two
directions, pushing down on the body and pushing from the driver's side to
the passenger side. Though it is more pronounced vertically.
The only other thought is that is only really occurs when the spring is
compressed. If I jack the car up to take the wheel off the ground, the
sound disappears.
I spent some time holding onto each suspension mounting point while trying
(mostly in vain) to recreate the sound. But I can't feel any of these
points moving. I can feel the "thunk" in the suspension though. Very
strange.
Any ideas, tests, possible trouble spots?
