Since these sort of questions come up from time to time, and since I just
got a flyer from the state, I thought I'd outline here the important years
for Maryland enissions testing so it would be in the list archives.
- 1976 model year or earlier vehicles are not required to be emissions tested
- motorcycles, diesel-powered vehicles, and vehicles over 26,000 lbs are
also exempted from testing
- 1977 thru 1983 model year vehicles get the stationary tailpipe sniff (they
say they're not sophisticated enough to show different emissions on
the treadmill than with the sniffer. Okay...)
- 1984 model year and newer get the dreaded "treadmill/dynamometer" test
So, in my case, the Pantera and RZ350 are exempt, the 928 gets it's tailpipe
sniffed (though it's exempt from a visual check because it's a properly
imported euro spec car), the Miatas have to ride the stupid treadmill, and
the A4Q has to ride the really stupid (and really scary!!) 4WD treadmill.
I wonder if the diesel-power is a good loophole to head for. If you
could somehow convince the state that a vehicle was diesel powered, that
might be the end of this particular form of harrassment. Hmmm... I wonder
how you convince the state you've performed a diesel conversion...
