PCNC Las Vegas Speed Trials 1998 (Story concludes...)
In the 3rd lap, Bud was able to get around Larry on the back portion
of the track. It was also during this lap that Gary's street tires
started to over heat causing him to back off on his turn speed. This
allowed Charlie to set Gary up and pass him during the 4th lap. The
last time Charlie was this close to Gary, Charlie was taken out when
Gary spun.
The 5th lap saw Alan start to close the gap on John Parsons. John's
shifter handle came off during qualifying and couldn't be repaired.
He was now having problems getting his car into 3rd gear on the main
straight. Alan was more than willing to exploit this difficulty. Dennis
was now ready to lap his 1st car. David's MR2 was the first but not
the last car to go a lap down.
On the 6th lap, Charlie was now closing in on John Weigel. This must
have made John a little nervous because heading into turn one, John
tried to carry a little too much speed through the corner and put two
tires off course. This kicked up a huge cloud of dust. Charlie had
an immediate flash back of the 1996 collision and decided not to pursue
through the dust. This gave John the opportunity to regain control and
start to motor away. By now Charlie's stock brakes were becoming hot
and he decided to let John go and just maintain his current track position.
Larry was also having some problems due to stock brakes. Ed's Miata was
slowly chasing him down. No Pantera owner is going to just let a Miata
pass him. So instead of letting up and allowing the brakes to cool, Larry
went into the series of corners prior to the main straight a little hot
and looped the car. The Miata motored happily by.
The 7th lap sees Dennis taking advantage of Larry's spin to lap his 1st
Pantera. He then quickly chases Ed down and did him the same favor.
Bud goes on by Gary who is still nursing his hot tires.
The 8th lap is the beginning of the end for John Parsons. He's managed to
keep Alan behind him, but now as the lap begins he receives the dreaded
black flag. It seems that John's car is spraying the track with water like
a dog marking its territory. His car isn't over heating. A faulty weld
on a pressure tank has given way and shooting water all over. Alan makes
the pass as John comes off the power.
On the 9th lap the only one still passing is Dennis. He adds Gary to his
list of victims. To add insult to injury, Dennis just nips by Bud to put
him a lap down as the Checkered Flag fly's on the last lap.
The finishing order was:
Dennis Quella 1st overall 1st Competition Class
Alan Foster 2nd 1st Pantera Unlimited
John Weigel 3rd 1st Pantera Modified
Charlie Puckett 4th 2nd Pantera Unlimited
Bud Greene 5th 3rd Pantera Unlimited
Gary Hall 6th 1st Pantera Street
Ed Kornegay 7th 1st Sports Car
Larry Stock 8th 2nd Pantera Modified
David Briggs 9th 2nd Sports Car
John Parsons 10th 3rd Pantera Modified
I would first like to thank all the participants who keep the performance
image of the Pantera alive by their enthusiastic support of track events.
If it wasn't for these people, we might as well be 57 Chevy owners and
just spend all our time cruising around. I would also like to thank the
performance fans who demonstrated their support by attending the race.
And finally a very big thanks to our sponsors:
Gary Hall Hall Pantera Primary
Sponsor
Larry Stock Pantera Parts Connection Associate Sponsor
Dennis Quella Pantera Performance Colorado Associate Sponsor
They not only contributed to the event to keep the price down, but each
one participated in the Exhibition Race. Now that's enthusiasm!
(End of story.)
