The '71's had the benefit of the higher compression quench heads
but had a weak camshaft. The later engines had lower compression
open chamber heads and dished pistons but had the stronger CJ
cam (installed 4 degrees retarded in later engines for emissions)..
The figures are not directly comparable because of the ratings
method change - gross (300 hp) versus net (266 hp). Of course,
it's no big deal to swap heads and most Pantera engines are not
stock anymore.
