DeTomaso Mailing List: March 99, Message #198

OK, OK...

Shane wanted to do this all along, but I was resistant... just on
principle.  But the sheer volume of spam that's been hitting the list has
convinced me.

Tomorrow (Saturday March 13, 1999) I will be changing the list so that only
subscribed addresses can post to the list.  

I'm delaying until tomorrow to give me time to change the code to send a
little nicer message to non-subscribers who send to the list - I don't want
to turn off any prospective list members who just don't know how things work.

It also gives anybody who really feels strongly that this is a bad idea a
day to talk me out of it.  If you really do believe that this is a bad idea,
speak up - everybody's opinion (except D-Mann's) counts.

If you have multiple mail accounts, and want to be able to send mail to the
list from accounts that are not currently subscribed, I have a solution:
subscribe that account to the list and add a "set detomaso mail postpone"
command.  That will tell the list software not to send any list mail to that
address, but that address will be permitted to send mail to the list.

I will add this information to Shane's very thorough welcome and info
messages, so if you forget any of this, just send mail to
listserv@realbig.com with "info detomaso" in the mail message and it will
send you back comprehensive instructions.

PS - I'm also working on removing email addresses from the list archives to
prevent scumbags from harvesting our email addresses from there... that
will take a couple of days though.
