2nd Free Practice Session
[5 March 1999 - 22h00 to 00h00 GMT]
Its bright, sunny, 12 deg on track and 19 deg in the air as
the final Free Practice session for the Australia Grand Prix
gets under way. M.Schumacher is first out on track with
many of the rest getting stuck behind Takagi's Arrows as he
stalls at the pit exit. In the first few minutes almost
everyone takes a trip around the track and returns to the
pits.
6 minutes into the 45 minute session R.Schumacher puts down
the first complete lap at 1m 47.128s followed by a second at
1m 35.383s. 5 minutes later Frentzen takes the top time at
1m 34.640s. In the next few minutes both Gene and
M.Schumacher take trips over the grass.
At the 15 minutes point the top 6 are: Coulthard (1m
32.698s - 4L), Frentzen (1m 33.905s - 6L), M.Schumacher (1m
34.937s - 4L), R.Schumacher (1m 35.383s - 3L), Alesi (1m
35.468s - 5L).
In the next 15 minutes:Coulthard takes fastest to 1m
31.695s, Hakkinen takes 2nd at 1m 32.576s, Zonta pulls off
onto the grass with mechanical problems, M.Schumacher takes
3rd at 1m 33.590s, Herbert takes 3rd at 1m 32.660s, Gene
spins off into the gravel and has to walk home, Coulthard
takes fastest to 1m 31.140s, Hill spins into the gravel and
walks.
At the 30 minute point the top 6 are: Coulthard (1m 31.140s
- 7L), Hakkinen (1m 32.576s - 5L), Herbert (1m 32.660s -
8L), M.Schumacher (1m 33.038s - 9L), Fisichella (1m 33.241s
- 6L), Frentzen (1m 33.350s - 10L).
In the final 15 minutes: Villeneuve drives over the grass
likewise Zanardi, Villeneuve then takes another ride in the
grass, Irvine slides off over the grass, Hakkinen tries but
cannot beat Coulthard's time, Coulthard also runs several
laps mostly 1s off his best, Badoer takes his turn crossing
the lawn, Hakkinen takes 2nd at 1m 31.377s, Hakkinen takes
fastest at 1m 31.123s,
By the end of this first 45 minute session the top 6 are:
Hakkinen (1m 31.123s - 11L), Coulthard (1m 31.140s - 13L),
Herbert (1m 32.660s - 12L), M.Schumacher (1m 32.945s - 12L),
Diniz (1m 32.999s - 15L), Wurz (1m 33.110s - 14L).
As Hill takes to the track to start the final 45 minute
session the air is at 24C and the track at 20C. Hill is
followed on to the track by M.Schumacher.
In the first 15 minute part of the session: something small
falls off the Benetton of Wurz, M.Schumacher continues to
have grip problems, Wurz takes 6th at 1m 33.110s, Wurz spins
over the grass and bangs into a solid wall, Wurz is ok but
the car is half on the track, SESSION STOPPED.
5 minutes later and we are back in action with Gene and
Coulthard first on track, Frentzen drives over the grass, de
la Rosa spins off into the gravel at the same place Gene and
Hill did earlier, waved yellow flags slow up Hakkinen on his
fast lap, Diniz crosses the grass, Hakkinen finally
completes a full fast lap and takes the top time to 1m
30.324s, Alesi pulls off onto the grass with mechanical
problems, Coulthard nearly runs off, Badoer crosses the
grass, Villeneuve crosses the grass, M.Schumacher improves
to 1m 32.722s but stays in 4th.
At the 15 minute point the top 6 are: Hakkinen (1m 30.324s
- 15L), Coulthard (1m 31.140s - 19L), Herbert (1m 32.660s -
17L), M.Schumacher (1m 32.722s - 20L), Diniz (1m 32.999s -
19L), Irvine (1m 33.103s - 15L).
In the next 15 minutes: Barrichello takes 5th at 1m
32.828s, M.Schumacher is in and out of the pits, Takagi runs
over the grass, Diniz retires in the gravel, Trulli spins
onto the grass next to Diniz and stalls, Hakkinen loses
another fast lap as he passes the Diniz/Trulli parking lot,
M.Schumacher touches the grass while on a flier, just behind
him Coulthard does the same thing.
At the 30 minute point the top 6 are: Hakkinen (1m 30.324s
- 20L), Coulthard (1m 31.140s - 23L), Herbert (1m 32.660s -
21L), M.Schumacher (1m 32.722s - 24L), Barrichello (1m
32.828s - 17L), Frentzen (1m 32.876s - 24L).
In the final 15 minutes: Coulthard improves to 1m 30.969s
but stays 2nd, Hakkinen runs several laps all over 1s off
his fastest, Coulthard gets stuck in traffic, M.Schumacher
watches from the pits, Hill takes 4th at 1m 32.661s, in the
final few minutes Hakkinen and M.Schumacher head on to the
track for a final fast lap each, Villeneuve takes 5th at 1m
32.717s,.
At the end of the session the top 6 are: Hakkinen (1m
30.324s - 26L), Coulthard (1m 30.969s - 30L), Herbert (1m
32.569s - 26L), Hill (1m 32.661s - 30L), Villeneuve (1m
32.717s - 20L), M.Schumacher (1m 32.722s - 26L). Four World
Champions in the first 6!
The top 3 exit speeds in each track sector were: 1:
Coulthard (282kph), Hakkinen, Hill, 2: Hakkinen (299kph),
Coulthard, Villeneuve, 3: Hakkinen (289kph), Coulthard,
Irvine.
The best 3 times in each track sector were: 1: Coulthard
(29.782s), Hakkinen, M.Schumacher, 2: Hakkinen (23.909s),
Coulthard, Herbert, 3: Hakkinen (36.497s), Coulthard, Hill.

Qualifying Session
[6 March 1999 - 02h00 to 03h00 GMT]
Mika Hakkinen took pole position in todays Qualifying
session for the Australian Grand Prix, joining him on the
1st row of the grid will be his McLaren team mate David
Coulthard. Arch rival Michael Schumacher will be on the
second row along side Brazilian Rubens Barrichello.
Frentzen and Irvine complete the top six.
Todays Qualifying session got off to a slow start with
Herbert being the first on track after 11 minutes of
silence. He was soon joined by Zanardi and Zonta. At this
point the weather was bright and sunny with the air at 30C
and the track at 24C.
By the 15 minute point the top 10 were just these 3: (1)
Herbert, (2) Zonta, (3) Zanardi
Rather than running 4 sets of 3 laps Zanardi seemed to be
trying to get it over with quickly, 22 minutes into the
session he had run 6 of his 12 laps with a best time of 1m
33.560s.
27 minutes into the session and Hakkinen is the first of
the big-guns. After several lost laps in traffic he finally
took pole from Barrichello at 1m 31.063s. Coulthard quickly
joined him at the front with a 1m 32.625s.
By the 30 minute point 12 of the 22 cars had set fast laps
and the top 10 were: (1) Hakkinen, (2) Coulthard, (3)
Barrichello, (4) Zanardi, (5) Herbert, (6) R.Schumacher, (7)
Trulli, (8) de la Rosa, (9) Zonta, (10) Gene. Minutes later
Coulthard had a moment when he spun off over the grass.
At 35 minutes Villeneuve opened his account with a 1m
33.161s to take 4th place, 2 minutes later and
M.Schumacher completed his first fast lap at 1m 32.144s to
take 3rd.
With 15 minutes left many cars had been seen spinning over
the grass and the top 10 were: (1) Hakkinen, (2) Coulthard,
(3) M.Schumacher, (4) Irvine, (5) Barrichello, (6) Frentzen,
(7) Hill, (8) R.Schumacher, (9) Villeneuve, (10) Trulli.
Barrichello took 4th at 1m 32.148s with 10 minutes to go.
Coulthard put in some fliers and moved to within 0.001s of
Hakkinen, he finally put in a convincing 1m 30.946s to take
over the pole. 2 minutes later Hakkinen blows it away with
a stunning 1m 30.462s (remember his pole last year was 1m
30.010s).
By the end of the session the track was still at 24C
whilest the air had dropped to 24C.
The top 3 times in each track sector were; 1: Hakkinen
(30.173s), Coulthard, M.Schumacher, 2: Hakkinen (23.969s),
Coulthard, M.Schumacher, 3: Hakkinen (36.150s), Coulthard,
M.Schumacher.
The fastest 3 exit speeds in each track sector were: 1:
Hakkinen (282kph), Coulthard, Hill, 2: Hakkinen (295kph),
Coulthard, Irvine, 3: Hakkinen (293kph), Coulthard,
Frentzen.
1 second covers the first 2 places and two seconds the
first 6.
