There are some tricky ways of electroplating plastic, but for home use, the
easiest is electroless nickel. This is not electroplate but in fact is a
chemical reaction that deposits shiny nickel metal on any surface. Check
around your local area electronics industry and see if any shops do
'electroless nickel'. In CA, there are yellow-pages full of such shops, so one
can actually price-shop. Let us know how your search in NZ goes; maybe I can
