Having been victimized by a sheared dist pin once myself, I can confirm that my symptoms matched yours pretty closely. It idled rougher and rougher (presumably as the timing got more and more out of whack) then wouldn't idle at all. I too had a spectacular fireball or two coming out the carb. I would look there first and cross your fingers. If this is the problem, it is a quick and cheap fix.

Gee...Sounds like another case of sheared (or partly sheared) distributor
roll pin..??
Without any more info to go on I would pull the distributor and check this
first.
