| Subject: | Axle Nut (HELP ME !!!!!) |

Here is the axle nut scenario:
Drivers side nut (not to be confused with the car driver):
Lose, tightened successfully with a minimal amount of trouble.
Passengers side nut:
Found to be lose in one direction only. The wheel had play in a side to side
motion but no play in an up and down motion.(Go figure).
Nut had been destroyed with a punch or chisel by a previous person unknown
to me.
Ground the nut to a point that I could get the special tool on it to remove
the nut and install a new one.
COULD NOT MOVE THE NUT.
I tried with a long cheater bar but COULD NOT MOVE THE NUT.
I tried impact wrench and COULD NOT MOVE THE NUT but did destroy the special
tool. Ordered new tool.
Used a Dremel to carefully cut the flange off of the not. I figured this
was the part that actually was LOCKING the nut on the axle. Tried to remove
nut with new and improved tool and a LONG cheater bar. COULD NOT MOVE THE
NUT.
Tried heating the nut and using a VERY LONG cheater bar. COULD NOT MOVE THE
NUT.
Got a bigger friend to try with an obscenely long cheater bar and COULD NOT
MOVE THE NUT
I have a machinist friend coming over tonight to see if he can machine off
the nut without hurting the axle.
Has anybody ever run into this. The damn thing must be welded on. Any
IDEAS? I know Jack talked about having it cut with a torch, but I don't
know anyone I would hand this to and say Cut the nut off but don't hurt the
rest of the parts. If my machinist can't do the job, and ANYONE thinks they
can, let me know. I am getting desperate.
