I'd start off slowly, with an intake and carb swap.  The timing chain might be
due for a change if the car has more than about 40K-50K miles on it, but at
least for starters, you can do the intake/carb swap in your driveway, labor
cost zilcho.

Also, it IS possible to change the timing chain with the engine in the car,
but it's a very tight squeeze.  Gary Berger wrote a how-to tech article on the
subject in the POCA newsletter about eight or nine years ago; the fact that it
warrented an article makes me think that it's a far from trivial job!
