I just completed my first engine starting from a bare block.  Others have
wisely commented on the need for a good machine shop and the
lifesaving/enginesaving advice on this board.  For my $0.02 i would add a
practical friend to second guess and call upon for advice/look over your
shoulder from time to time and a good "how to" book.  I used "how to rebuild
ford V8 engines" by Tom Monroe.  It focusses on the 351c family of engines
and is a great confidence builder and source of practical magic advice.
