I hate to say it Tom but there is no easy way to get into painting. I
have sprayed paint with everything from a paint spray gun for an
Electrolux vacuum cleaner to the Binks #7 I now use. The better the
equipment the easier the job. If you are starting, buy quality so you
don't buy twice. I'd start with nothing less than a 2 hp compressor or a
5 if you can. Remember if you are going to run air tools such as a
polisher or sander they use a lot of air. Watch the delivery rate
because horsepower does not tell the whole story. I recently have gone
to a 7hp. You could start with a touch up gun for what you describe but
get a Binks or Devilbiss. Blending paint on a repaired scratched area is
a tough proposition and will probably take a lot of tries to get it
right, so don't get discouraged. People complain about costly painting
bills but the raw materials have gone out of site. When I buy anything
from my paint supplier it is a minimum $35 or better if it comes in a
can. We have our government and the EPA to thank. It seems we could cut
down a lot on global warming just by eliminating the Washington hot air.
I'm not a painter but have been doing it for a long time. There is
nothing more satisfying than to look at a good paint job and know you
did it. Good luck.
