It did get me to thinking about the SS cars and how many run with stock
setups or how many run with larger oil pans and also how many run oil
coolers.
Scott,
The first two times I ran SS (at 110 and 125) I did so with a steel
10 quart Pantera Performance oil pan and Mobil One. I did not have an
oil temp gauge then but I did not notice any significant drop in oil
pressure (maybe 10% on the second run by the end).
Most recently I ran the 140 with a Pantera Performance aluminum 10
quart pan and had an oil temp gauge. I plan to add a oil / water
exchanger (Fluidyne or Aeroquip) for my next run but I am doing that
mainly in preperation for a faster bracket.
As Our Esteemed Leader pointed out in his response you are probably
fine with a stock system (and synthetic oil) in the 125 and under
bracket, which is where we reccommend all first timers to start.
The real key, though, is your engine RPM. If you are running normal
gears (4:22) then your tire height is the primary factor. This is why I
went from rear tires having a height of 24.5" to the R1's with 27.1". I
can now run 140mph with a lower RPM than I had at 125 with my shorter
tires.
Your question about elevation is very relevant. The only other
change I had to make was carb jetting. I live at sea level (SD) and the
car was a dog it's first time in Ely. The Team jumped in and with Erik
Belter installing Ellis Woumann's #68 jets over my #72 the car ran
great. You may want to experiment at this elevation and see how your
jetting is.
Look forward to seeing you cross the finish line in September.
