| Subject: | How fast can a Goose fly with no speedometer? |
| Date: | Thu, 8 Jul 1999 15:20:01 -0400 |
All,
Well, last nite was a slow one in the Goose saga. Dropped the wheels off at
the powder shop, matched up a better shade of silver...
Decided to bead blast and paint one of my jackshaft pulleys that was
getting some surface rust on it, so pulled it off and did the deed. Painted
it up with some of Eastwood's Detail gray. Looks nice!
The speedo situation got the better of me. PO sez that the speedo never
worked. Decided to look into it. Removed cable from 90 degree adaptor.
Hooked drill to cable and turned CCW and actually registered speed!!! So,
speedo appears to be good....as would be the cable.
Next was the "did the shaft drop into the tranny cause the PO was an idiot
and took it apart" thing. Called Jack to ask.... On the Goose, the trans
is mounted correct side up. So, the adaptor thingy sits at a 45 degree
angle upwards. Jack maintained that I could remove this and have the shaft
come out too! He was correct! After looking at it, I can see where the
inadept Pantera owner/mechanic could really screw this up.... but if you
took your time and pulled real slow... you could do it OK. The shaft
really isn't all that small, but rather about a half inch in diameter and
about 2.5 inches long!
I pulled the adaptor out, 'cause I could turn the output piece that engages
the speedo cable. This didn't seem right. If I pushed it in, I could feel
teeth... but nothing real positive.
Once on the bench, things looked bad from the beginning. The more I took
apart, the more pieces I found that previously were part of a single unit....
Bottom line, teeth on two bevel gears internal to 90 degree adaptor are
toast! Good news, is that this is just a 90 degree adaptor. 1:1 ratio,
nothing fancy!
SO, any ideas on where to get internal gears for a VDO speedo drive 90
degree adaptor???????
Help Mr Wizard!
Markings on device are: VDO, Made in Duetchland, "43/11/1" , 11.68
(probably date produced) and 1:1= (ratio).
ANY ideas would be most helpful!
Thanks,
Steve
