Day 1: 1st Free Practice

1st Free Practice Session
[9 July 1999 - 12h00 to 15h00 CET]
It was good weather for today's First Free Practice session
at the British Grand Pirx at Silverstone, England.

 As per usual the two Ferrari's stayed in the pits for most
of the first 60 minute half session.  When they did finally
come onto the track they were just as fast as the McLaren's
that had already run several laps.

 By the end of the session Hakkinen was fastest at 1m
27.059s with Irvine just 0.002s behind him.  The rest of the
first group were M.Schumacher, R.Schumacher and Coulthard.
Villeneuve was 6th fastest 0.5s behind Coulthard.

 During the session: Coulthard spun on track, Trulli had a
suspension failure which dumped him into the tyre wall,
Panis then lost a lot of time while the mechanics inspected
his car for signs of a similar problem,  and Stewart were
dogged by vibration problems.

 Latest rumours say that Hill (11th fastest) will not be
retiring after the race on Sunday as previously expected.

 After a 1 hour rest the cars were back on track for the
second 60 minute part of the session.  Well most of them
were, Trulli had no car after his earlier crash and Panis
stayed mostly in the pits due to safety concerns about his
car.

 R.Schumacher put in some serious laps improving by over
0.4s and ended the session 2nd fastest just 0.023s behind
Hakkinen.

 Neither Irvine nor M.Schumacher improved their times
despite 16 and 27 laps respectively.  Their time was spend
testing different wing configurations.

 No luck for Jordan star Frentzen ending his day 14th
fastest and complaining of leg pains.  Better luck for
retiring (!) teammate Hill who moved from 11th to 7th
fastest when he improved by 1.3s.

 To put the times into prespective Hakkinen's fastest of 1m
26.981s, is 1.1s slower than his best 1m 25.89s in practice
at the same circuit last week.  Last years best time in Free
1 was 1m 25.640s by Coulthard, the pole time last year was a
stunning 1m 23.217s by Hakkinen.
