To help beat this to death, the tips-up version can collect rain water.

What you have is a late-style stock system, from what I recall. You
have
conventional L-model tailpipes. If you had Pre-L pipes which tip UP
at a
radical angle, they would not clear the bumper. Your pipes tip up
at a
slight angle and do clear the bumper.

To add a little to this, the L-model tips are not level to the
ground, the tips
are aligned straight to the muffler, while the pre-L tips have an
angle to them
vs the muffler.
To add more, I have the pre-L tailpipes on my L-model (with full
L-bumpers)
and they do clear the bumper. Now they only clear by about 1/2
inch, and
I do get soot on the bumper, but I like the looks this way (was
already on the
car when I got it). This doesn't mean they will fit the same on all
L-models!
