The 'stock' system is a single surge tank, with a single overflow tank. Some
people have changed things around considerably (myself included) but a surge
tank is needed to top up & de-aerate the circulating water since the radiator
is mounted too low to function as an add point, and an overflow tank is
necessary to retain & return the excess water that expands & exits the
cooling system, then is drawn back inside upon cool-down. The stock overflow
(larger) tank could be exchanged for a plastic tank of the type found on many
GM/Ford vehicles, but it is still necessary for one to be there in some form,
IMHO. Cheers- J DeRyke.
