Hi guys,

I'm the Campy geek as you may recall from my in-depth article in Profiles
several years back, in which I detailed the ins and outs of the four known
(to me, at that time) variations on the Campy wheel from '71 to '74.

Last weekend at the PCNC tech session, Ted Stalkup pointed out a variation
that I'd never noticed before on L-model wheels. Turns out there's an early
and late-style L-model wheel, making for a total of five types.

I've currently got 10-inch Campys for my car, and my front wheels are 8-inch
Pre-L wheels which do NOT match. Seeking to overcome this, I had purchased
two individual L-model 8-inch wheels from different people.

After Ted pointed out the difference at the tech session, I raced home and at
4:30 a.m. took a good hard look at my two replacement wheels.

You guessed it. They don't match. One is a June '72 wheel (early version of
the L-model wheel) and the other is an August 1977 (!) wheel. Late style.
That one matches my 10's.

I went into the garage where I've got a borrowed set of wheels from Russ
Britschgi's '73. Damned if the fronts and rears are different!!!! The
fronts are both dated September '73 and are late-style L-model, while the
rears are June '73 and are early-style L-model! This is the way his car came
from the factory. Only a super mega-geek like me would have noticed, and
it's taken me four months...

So anyway, here's the dilemma. I prefer the latest style of wheel since they
match my rears, but I've only got one suitable 8-incher. So does anybody out
there have a single late late late 8-inch Campy they'd be willing to let go
of?

I suppose I could see my way to buying a pair if I had too--hell, I might
even buy a whole set of 7's and 8's if the price was right, just to get the
'right' 8's...that would leave me with a full set of four (mis-matched) 8's
on which I could mount slicks, plus two 7's, and I've got another 7 rattling
around the garage somewhere--one more 7 and I could off a set of 7's on the
Mustang crowd...

Sigh--it's not easy being a super-geek! :>)

Mike
